Theon Greyjoy and Nick Clegg

(spoiler alert — don’t read this if you don’t want to know what happens in Game of Thrones)

I’ve just been watching Game of Thrones S02E06 (or via Pirate Party UK proxy), and I can’t help thinking that Theon Greyjoy is a tragic figure somewhat like Nick Clegg. Both of them:

  • are weak-willed characters
  • saw an opportunity to get power (Greyjoy by attacking Winterfell, Clegg by going in with the Tories)
  • committed an act of betrayal (Greyjoy by betraying the people he’d grown up with, Clegg by abandoning his promises)
  • that led to their downfall (we’ve not seen Greyjoy’s in the TV series yet; Clegg’s party will be slaughtered at the next election)

The sad thing about Clegg is that the Liberal Democrats will go down with him. They are unlikely to lose all their seats at the next general election, but will lose most of them; FPTP is a brutal electoral system for small parties of the Lib Dems’ size. This would be unfortunate (I say this as a former Lib Dem) not because of Nick Clegg (who will be unlamented) but the loss of the Lib Dems as a serious force in UK politics will make Westminster an even more dysfunctional political arena.

And David Cameron is like the young Lannister King, a spoilt, born to rule brat who is quickly alienating his citizens.
