First thoughts on UK European election result

OK, we now have some results in on the European election in the UK (and, more importantly, I’m just back from the pub), so here are my first impressions:

1. The BNP have won 1 seat so war with 33 seats declared; they’ll probably pick up another one or two.

2. The English Democrats seem to be picking up 1-2% of the vote. They’ve also won the majoralty of Doncaster. This makes them an electorally serious political party; well done English Democrats.

3. The Tories won the most votes in Wales (21.2% v. Labour’s 20.3). Labour will be unhappy about this.

4. Labour’s share of the vote in North East England was down 9.1% to 25%; that’s seriously bad for them.
