The point of civil liberties

Tim Worstall, writing about the Muslim protestors against the Royal Anglian Regiment:

The protestors then had to be protected by police as angry supporters of the soldiers turned on them shouting: “Scum” and “No surrender to the Taliban.”……Two lines of police officers protected the anti-war protestors from a large number of locals,

We are still a free country and we do still enjoy (however much some would like to take it away from us) the right of free speech. And the duty of the police is to protect the rights of the citizenry. People shouting at soldiers have the same rights to such protection as I do if I were shouting “God Save the Queen”.

That’s the thing about civil liberties you see. They have to be extended to all, even to those you or I find appalling, disreputable or even disgusting. The whole point of them is that no one is beyond the Pale.

Quite. If civil liberties protect arseholes, they’ll also protect you and me.
