Even Blunkett thinks civil liberties are being lost

Even David Blunkett — one of the most hardline Home Secretaries this country has ever had — thinks Britain’s civil liberties are under threat:

When David Blunkett reckons civil liberties are being eroded, you know something’s seriously wrong. The most authoritarian Home Secretary in living memory has expressed concerns about the government’s plans to create a database which will record details of every phone call made and every email sent. He is of course right to voice these concerns. But does anyone seriously think that if he was still Home Secretary, he wouldn’t be proudly advocating exactly the same plans?

One Response to Even Blunkett thinks civil liberties are being lost

  1. Graham says:

The most authoritarian Home Secretary in living memory

Astonishing how young bloggers are these days. Not to remember Michael Howard being Home Sec you’d probably have to be about 15. Actually, it probably implies not remembering Straw either, which implies an age of about ten.

Amazing how short people’s memories are these days, although I suppose “the most authoritarian Home Secretary since the last one” doesn’t really have the same ring to it.
