Greenpeace’s “Nuclear Reaction” blog

Greenpeace have started a new blog, Nuclear Reaction, which charts “the meltdown of the nuclear industry”. It’s by Justin McKeating who — as some of you know — also blogs at Chicken Yoghurt.

    Is it even possible to run industrial civilization on renewable energy alone though? We started using fossil fuels in the 18th century (largely because the use of the previous fuel – firewood – was becoming unsustainable), and the world only had a seventh of today’s population then…

    I don’t use the word “renewable” since I regard it as meaningless. For example, is solar power “renewable”? The sun’s hydrogen is being burnt to make it, and is not being renewed, so I guess not. OTOH, it won’t run out for another few billion years.

    I suspect it probably is possible to run society on a mixture of wind water and solar power.
