Self-replicators

Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a machine that could make a wide variety of other machines, including copies of itself?

Well, there is: RepRap has achieved replication for the first time.

Of course, it can’t yet manufacture all of it’s own parts, merely the plastic ones, but the idea is that over time more advanced generations of RepRaps will be able to manufacture larger subsets of their own components.

Eventually you could get a machine which with a small number of standardised parts as raw materials could make a wide variety of other machines.
