Norman Geras finds Sunday schools for atheists creepy:
I’m not sure why I find this idea slightly creepy, but I do. It’s the idea of Sunday schools for atheists. The rationale seems to be twofold: to teach the children of atheists humanist values; and to give them a form of social support against pressures from the children of religious families. These purposes are perfectly legitimate. I guess my reservation comes out of the thought of the organized imparting of a doctrine, where education about atheism should be, rather, the teaching of scepticism.
Not half as creepy as it is for religious hierarchies to plot to enslave the minds of future generations to force them to live in ignorance and superstition. Personally I would see nothing wrong with banning the proselytising of religion to anyone under 16.
